At Fraser Primary School we recognise the importance of being literate in today's world. We aim to ensure that all students achieve and develop the essential literacy skills to become lifelong learners. The English curriculum is built around the three interrelated strands of language, literature and literacy. Teaching and learning programs balance and integrate all three strands. Together, the three strands focus on developing students’ knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, reading, viewing, speaking, writing and creating. Learning in English builds on concepts, skills and processes and teachers will develop and strengthen these as needed. Literacy lessons are purposeful, interactive and engaging, with real world applications. The gradual release of responsibility instructional model, integrated into a workshop format, best guides students toward understanding and independence. A workshop format is based on the principles of time, choice, response, and community, and it allows for in depth teaching and learning, flexibility, differentiation, and ultimately, independence.
